Waipu Cove SLSC impacts our local Bream Bay community, as well as the wider Northland community in a positive and engaging way. From educating the community in water safety while on patrol at the beach, hosting community events, bringing other volunteer groups together, hosting other sports teams, other surf life saving teams, promoting water safety through social media. To supporting the community with a safe place to swim, participating in beach safety sessions at Uretiti for crab fisherman, or running beach education at Langs, to actively participating in and supporting other community initiatives such as Winter in Waipu - Mid Winter Swim, Christmas Parade, Caledonian Games - this year the Waipu Community Festival, Waipu Cycle and walkway, and supporting the Easter Carnival with gazebos. We are proud to be part of such a strong community, and thrive on helping to promote it as a positive place to foster growth in our youth.
Waipu Cove SLSC has been recognized by MahiTahi Hauora as being a place with strong leadership, mentoring, family orientated, scaffolded learning, structured, supported, gateway into adulthood. They recognised our model / concept as one that produces confident, responsible well rounded, community minded healthy young people.
We encourage our members to be active, and we often have beach volleyball set up for the public and our members to use, we encourage table tennis and pool when on breaks from Surf Life Saving. Our teams also train and compete in IRB racing around the country, surf sport, junior surf, and masters canoeing.
Our members get a lot out of Surf Life Saving, which in turn benefits the community. They come away with recognised employable skills and qualifications. For example first aid, VHF radio, leadership, beach management, coaching, peer support, learning to be responsible employees and gain employment readily.
We strive to continue to impact the community in a positive and engaging way to keep our people safe, and all those who visit our beaches.
We also hope to impact our own people by giving them opportunities in leadership, developing their skills as sports people, growing a community mindset, and teaching them to give back – which will continue to foster a wonderful Bream Bay area as the place everyone wants to be.
